Building a Septic System in Solid Rock

Local environmental law (yes environmental law) required a huge 4 chamber septic system (leech field not allowed). The crews began digging by hand, but progress was extremely slow. Eventually they were able to obtain a jack hammer and work progressed a little faster.

The last chamber had to be 10 feet deep to break through a layer of impermeable rock, otherwise the waste water would have followed the rock layer to the beach. This chamber is filled with different grades of gravel and sand to filter out any remaining bacteria.
